International Day of Peace 2009

On the 21st September the International Day of Peace will be celebrated around the world. As a worldwide peace organisation SCI is involved in these celebrations: many branches organize special activities.

SCI Malaysia, in partnership Taiping Peace Initiative is inviting you to a Peace Exhibition called ‘Seeds of Change’, video presentations, a quiz contest and a cultural exchange performance. To commemorate peace day a peace candle will be lit and on the 21st at noon there will be a moment of silence.

International Volunteers for Peace (IVP), the Australian Branch of SCI, is organizing a short film, together with a common lunch, a peace workshop, a performance and a lively discussion on peace topics with participation of various organisations, such as: IVP, People for Nuclear Disarmament (PND), Womens International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF) and Australian Anti-Bases Coalition (AABC).

SCI-France is inviting both French and international volunteers to use their creative skills for a place of free expression (pictures, drawings, text...). The subject of expression is: Concrete Acts for Peace.  The material will be displayed during different events in Paris. If you want to take part in this project, please send your creation to SCI- France; 20, Rue Camille Flammarion 75018 PARIS) or by e-mail to estelle@sci-france.org. Deadline is 21st of September 2009.

Voluntary Service International Ireland invites you on 21st September to a screening of the film 'The Day after Peace' with speakers from VSI and ‘Why Violence’ Campaign. The documentary is made by Jeremy Gilley and charts a 10-year journey to establish an annual Peace Day. Gilley travels around the world raising awareness of the official day of ceasefire and non violence. However, even after this 'Peace Day' is adopted by the UN, the struggle is not over. The ceasefire is rarely adhered to, resulting in an outcry of cynicism... 'The Day after Peace' is a moving testament to the power of an individual and the perseverance of the human spirit'. Film details can be found on www.peaceoneday.org.

SCI Switzerland is planning a ‘flash mob’ on 20th September, in order to get people's attention and involve them in discussions. On 21st September, volunteers will organise a peace-bench and a peace-tree, to give everyone the chance to express ideas and opinions on the issue of peace. Peace-bench is equipped with different posters, and people will be able to decide in favour or against what they wish to demonstrate. The different aspects of peace can be analysed and discussed, and opinions written on cards that will be hanged on the peace tree in the city centre of Berne. For more info please contact placement@scich.org.

CVS Bulgaria is inviting all of you to discuss Peace Day: its origin and its results so far. It is an opportunity to talk about your own understanding of PEACE. Through interactive games you can discover how and why international conflicts occur, how violence in human relations can be avoided and what you can do yourself to establish peaceful communication in your homes, communities, and schools. CVS will also project the Peace One Day movie available at www.peaceoneday.org.
