What is Service Civil International?

Service Civil International is an international voluntary service organisation working for peace and justice through voluntary work. It was founded in 1920 as a response to the violence and tragedy of the First World War.

The first SCI project was an international workcamp near Verdun, France. Volunteers worked together to repair a village heavily damaged by the war. Participants came from many countries that only a few months earlier had been each other's enemies.

Thier action was a protest against militarism, a demonstration of peaceful cooperation and an enactment of the philosophy that real deeds, not words, will bring about a peaceful world. Today, although a lot has changed, these are still the basic elements of our work.

Today, SCI organises short, medium and long term international voluntary projects for people of all ages, races and religions. The projects bring together people from many different background and beliefs to work to bring about real positive change in a community. They take many forms and can include - teaching english in Nepal, organising a festival in Finland, planting trees in Iceland, working in orphanages in India, building schools in Africa, and many, many more...
